The Secret Papers of Madame Olivetti by Annie Vanderbilt

The Secret Papers of Madame Olivetti -- Annie Vanderbilt

Even though May was more rainy than April, I chose this book for the May challenge. The cover and title got my attention. The word "secret" combined with a French name enticed me. The book wasn't as scandalous as I was hoping it would be but it dis keep my attention. And even after the epilogue, I wanted to know more about the future of the characters. The main character is Lily and Madame Olivetti is actually her ancient typewriter. Yes the story takes place in modern times. Lol Lily is currently in France years after her husbands death. She believes typing her memories will help her work through her grief. The memories, of course, go in chronological order. She writes about heartbreaks, infidelity, ancestral history...and in between that we are told of her current situation in France. Of her neighbors, her family, her lovers, her friends; all of whom along with Madame Olivetti do help her overcome her grief for losing her husband. I really did enjoy this book. Lily seems to be a rather normal woman dealing with everyday woman issues.
